Original. Teacher: You should study more. 

Reported: The teacher says that you should study more. 


  • Explain, feel, think, believe, say.  

  • The teacher explains that you should study more.

  • Tell

  • The teacher tells students that you should study more.


  1. You should make a list of questions.

  2. You need to turn in your homework.


Part 2

Original. Teacher: what is the answer in exercise 2?

Reported: The teacher asks what the answer in exercise 2 is.

  • Ask, explain, describe, wonder 

  • The teacher explains what the answer in exercise 2 is.

  • Tell. 

  • The teacher tells them what the answer in exercise 2 is.

Part 3

Shifting tenses


Will - would

Original. Teacher: We will have an exam tomorrow. 

Reported: The teacher said that we would have an exam the following day. 

  1. You will fail

  2. You will not pass the exam. 


Simple past, present perfect - past perfect 

Original. Teacher: We had an exam yesterday. 

Reported: The teacher said that we had had an exam the previous day. 


Original. Teacher: We have completed unit 2

Reported: The teacher said that we had completed unit 2. 

  1. You did an excellent work

  2. You passed 



Present - past 

Original. Teacher: We have an exam. 

Reported: The teacher said that we had an exam. 


Original. Teacher: When do you want the exam? 

Reported: The teacher wondered when we wanted the exam.
